Elfen Lied Nyu, Nana & Lucy 1/8 PVC Figure Review

19.03.2009 by Adrian A. Lozano

Elfen Lied (pronounced Leed) is one of those anime titles that few people have actually ever heard of let alone seen. When ever this scenario happens this kind of show becomes more popular than when it was first released. Very little merchandise was produced for this anime series and if you happen to have gotten into Elfen Lied this late in the game it's going to cost you two arms and two legs to get this figure set.

Packaging & Contents:
Both figures comes in the average present day figure window box. The box graphic design looks nice but the design lacks any kind of warning sign of the darkness that lurks inside. As if the package designers have never seen the show, you would imagine something like a vault or something darker instead they are packed in a box that looks more like an Austin Powers cut scene music number. This set was only available from Wave Corporation's official website as a Wave Direct exclusive. Branded under their DreamTech figure line online orders where only taken for a few months prior to the 30th of September 2007 deadline. The amount of figures produced depended on how many orders where shipped out in January 2008. These figures by themselves have no accessories all you get are the figures and a display bases. Nyu's display base can be removed so you can freely display her anywhere, but due to the pose the sculptor gave Nana her base is non removable. Anybody who ordered both figures received a bonus parts set.

Sculpt:
Wave Corp. did a really good job on the face and hair sculpts both figures resemble the anime character fairly well. Still the quality of the figures from the neck down especially on Nana drops considerably for the price each were originally sold for. It looks as if the clothing of both characters is constructed of a lower grade plastic which gives them more of a 200 yen UFO catcher prize figure feel. Then again Wave Corp. as far as I'm aware is the only company that made figures for this series, and it looks like they found ways to cut corners so not to lose money on the entire run if order number turned out low.

Extras:
The bonus parts really compliment this set you can swap Nana's head ban which in the anime was "Papa" Kurama’s neck tie to reveal her Diclonius horns. Or you could turn the innocent breast groping Nyu into her blood thirsty murdering double personality Lucy simply by swapping out Nyu's face and bangs.

The Verdict:
If you were one of the lucky few living in Japan that ordered these online then it was money well spent. If you just found this series and are going to attempt to track this set down brace yourselves it can go for $600 plus on internet auction sites. I personal picked up a set for somebody then ended up watching the 13 episodes after I shipped them off which I now regret. Elfen Lied is gory as heck, but it can also be a tear jerking emotional train wreck.

These figures are indeed extremely rare and expensive. There's a set over on eBay currently, if anyone's interested--and willing to shell out $1100.

Adrian! I get it now! These are the figures you were talking about when we first met in Akiba. They are as nice as you described them, as was Enoshima Island. Thanks again for the tour and the recommendations.
