SIF EX Odin Sphere Mercedes & Velvet Sneek Peak

28.06.2009 by Adrian A. Lozano

Yamato Toys invited us over their Akihabara office to take a sneak peek of their Story Image Figure Extra of Mercedes from ATLUS's RPG game Odin Sphere. We set up a photo shoot with their paint master of the young Fairy Queen Mercedes and the former Prince of Valentine Ingway in cursed frog form. These two figures were sculpted by Makoto Kobayashi who is a very well know sculptor in the resin kit and figure realm. Yamamto has previously released several PVC figures of his works including Honey and Clover, and Kuma-san he also has Wonder Show Case and May Fair 2005 to his credit as well.

Amazingly cute and based of Mercedes' game charter profile art, the figure will be painted in flat matte colors that give it a delicate porcelain look and feel. The matte paint also gives the figure a dreamlike haze when displayed in a well-lit areas. Ingway wasn't originally included in the early stages of the figures' development, Yamato decided to add him as they got to know his importance to Mercedes. After seeing the game endings they thought Ingway would be a good extra for hardcore fans of the game. If the figure turns out exactly like the paint master I think this will be one of Yamamto's best figure releases to date.

Publicly the figure was first shown at last month's Hobby Complex and it was displayed on a Lilly pad display base decorated with two pearls. The Lilly pad base will be included with the final retail release that is painted but will have a porcelain glaze. The glaze is intentional so that the figure will stand out and the base will also reflect light upward toward the figure. Yamato was also selling resin kits of the Mercedes in advance of the figures release for kit makers; the resin kit is currently available for purchase on Yamamto's online shop.

Yamamto also revealed that they would be also releasing Story Image Figure Extra Velvet later this year. Velvet is sculpted by BUBBA who also had a booth at Hobby Complex and was selling the resin kit of Velvet and by noon the kit was sold out. At one o'clock the sculptor displayed the paint master of the figure Yamamto will release later this year. Just like Mercedes, Velvet is also based off the character's game profile pose.

Yamamto has not said if they will release more Odin Sphere character after these two, but I would say chances are good if sales are good. Mercedes figure is slated for an August 2009 release date with a suggested retail price tag of 8,140yen. You can pre-order her at the following online retailers.
