Do you know Wonder Showcase?

Each year, Kaiyodo hosts the Wonder Showcase, which is a special exhibition during Wonder Festival that spotlights a select group of talented creators from around the world. Selected artists get six months of support from the Wonder Showcase office. Here are the three artists selected in this year's Wonder Showcase.


WSC#051 "Duoala" (original garage kit) by Masanari Kusunoki (楠正成)
Masanari originally wanted to be a manga artist. He worked as a model finisher in an Akihabara rental showcase. One day he was offered the opportunity to create his own original kit. This kit would be become Duoala, surprisingly his very first product. The style he aimed for was a twin-tailed lolita. It was his drawing skills that lead to such a good quality kit.







WSC#052 "Gretel" (Otogi Zyushi Akazukin) by GiaGia (ぎあぎあ)
GiaGia is very familiar with the toy industry, being that his father worked in it for some time. He has participated in Wonder Festival since 2007. The Gretel pose is very dynamic; it is obvious that this type of piece required a high level of skill. "I have no fear about it. I made it because I would want it,” says GiaGia. His motivation to create is elemental. We can say, "This is the garage kit of garage kits."















WSC#053 "AMEISE ROBOTIC F.360 DELUXE" (Original) by Walter
Walter was the colorist on a French comic (bande dessinée) and has lived in Tokyo since 2001. He creates his models with the use of computer software. Both his products and packaging have a futuristic style to them. It is a great step that this kind of digital tool assisted work was selected for the Wonder Showcase.


ワンダーショウケースというイベントをご存知だろうか？
「ワンダーショウケース」とはワンダーフェスティバルを母体とするレーベルであり、
ワンフェスに参加しているアーティストのサポート期間及びそのプロデュースシステムでもある。
言ってしまえばガレージキット版「British got talent」の様なもので、選出されたアーティストは６ヶ月間のサポートを得ることができる。
このエントリーでは今回のワンダーショウケースに選出された３人のアーティストを紹介していきたいと思う。

楠正成「デュオアラ(オリジナル)」
元々は漫画家志望であった楠氏。
秋葉原のレンタルショーケースを利用したモデルフィニッシャーとして生計を立てていたが、
店側からオリジナルの造型をもちかけられたことをきっかけに本作品の制作を開始したという。
つまり、驚くべきことにこれが彼にとっての処女作ということになる。
幼女体型にツインテールといったその風貌は明らかに狙ったモノではあるが、漫画家志望であった氏の画力もあって、ツボを押さえたしっかりとしたクオリティに仕上がっている。

ぎあぎあ「グレーデル(おとぎ銃士 赤ずきん)」
父親が玩具関係の仕事をしていたため、幼少期から玩具の世界に触れる機会が多かったというぎあぎあ氏、ワンダーフェスティバルへは2007年から参加している。
今回選出対象となった作品「グレーデル」は、見ての通り非常にダイナミックな構図を取った作品である。
一般的な所謂「グラビア立ち」と呼ばれる構図と異なり、このようなダイナミックなポージングは高度な空間構成能力を必要とする。
決して長くないそのキャリアでこのような作品に挑戦することに「特に恐怖は無かった」と氏は言う。
「自分がほしかったから」、単純でありながらもモノ作りの原点とも言える動機によって制作されたこの作品は、いまの時代には珍しい「ガレージキットらしいガレージキット」と言えるだろう。

Walter「AMEISE ROBOTIC F.360 DELUXE(オリジナル)」
元々バンドデシネのカラーリストであったWalter氏は、2001年から東京在住。
主にコンピュータを使用したモデリングと、その3D出力物であるレジンキャストのプロデュースをひとりでこなす異色作家である。
今回の作品に限らず、氏の作品はまさしくFuturisticであり、かつその作品のみならずパッケージや取り扱い説明書などのトータルデザインにおいても秀逸である。
日本はオタク先進国ではあるが、そのツールのデジタライズにおいてはまだまだ後進であるイメージが強い。
これは、日本のネットリテラシーとの関連もあるのだが、ともあれこういった海外のアーティストが先進的な手法を積極的用いた作品で選出されたことは大きな一歩と言えるだろう。
