Yoyogi Animation Gakuin and 'Cool Japan'
15.11.2009 by Patrick W. Galbraith
Just saw this sign and thought it was funny. After the failed Aso Taro administration, I thought there might be a general ban on using this ridiculous "Cool Japan" idea. Honestly, even if soft power does exist and nations can disseminate a positive image, does that mean anything if the nation has no hard power to back it up? Japan just looks like its overcompensating for the rise of China, which will eclipse it's military and economic influence very soon. Besides, doesn't cool become uncool as soon as old politicians and capitalists get their hands on it? And, I might add, Cool Japan takes its name from Cool Britannia, a failed image campaign of another island nation a decade ago...

@Fauzi MG YAG is a technical school, or a vocational school. They train you for a job in certain industries - animation, manga, voice acting, etc - but it is not an accredited university. The only university in Japan for animation production as far as I know is Digital Hollywood University. If you are interested in manga, there is Kyoto Seika University, which now has a graduate program in manga production and theory. Good luck!

As if Anime and Manga didn't have anything to do with capitalism before "Cool Japan" came up.

The original Cool Britannia grew up in the 60s, when Britain genuinely became a major centre of cool through The Beatles, the fashion industry, photography, Mods and Rockers, and so on.
A second wave of Cool Britannia arose in the mid-90s thanks to the same kind of reasons. The incoming Labour Government hijacked the phrase and thus made it uncool, because you can't be cool by declaring yourself cool.

God I hate that stupid phrase "Cool Japan" with a passion!! They associate it with how anime or manga is looked at from outside of Japan. The only thing is we already knew for years what is cool and not cool coming from Japan, we don't need some stiff shirt telling us otherwise.

Yeah there are campaigns like this all over the world and their influence is questionable. In a sense it's a way to get their hands on something that in its roots negates old politicians and capitalists: youth and bloom.
